What to Expect

What to Expect  - Working Collaboratively

You would have learnt about the importance of teamwork and the chain of command as a veteran. However, you will be working with students who may have come straight from high school and have never really had to depend on others for their studies before.

It can be a steep learning curve when working with others that you will need to calibrate your own expectations of what everyone in the team can do, and how they perform.

So, what is a social loafer?

This means that someone in your team isn’t really putting effort in and it can be very frustrating to someone who knows that effort is required.

Some tips that may help:

  • Assign specific functions with clear dates to each person and unanimously agree on actions
  • Divide into subgroups
  • Meet frequently to get updates and share examples of what has been done so far (you don’t want to find out by the time work is due that someone hasn’t done their components)
  • Create visible tracking for everyone to recognise and monitor performance.

If all else fails, and one person (it may be due a family emergency and not deliberate) has not completed their components book some time to speak to your Lecturer and Unit Coordinator.
